SANTA FE. I

''The Citij Different''

The capital of New Mexico and second largest city in

the State, enjoys the distinction of being the oldest town on f

I the American continent. Its permanent settlement by Eur- %

J opeans in 1543 antedates the founding of Jamestown and the %

I landing of the Pilgrim Fathers at Plymouth by more than t

20 years. It is the headquarters of the federal and state

officers, the State Supreme court and the Catholic Diocese ^

and Arch-bishop of New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado; it % is adorned by many fine modern buildings, including the new % Capitol, Federal building, court house, penitentiary, Indian Z schools. State Deaf and Dumb school, college for boys and | an academy for girls, also a parochial school, a Presbyterian |; mission school for boys and one for girls, business houses % J and private residences, and is rendered interesting by the * presence of the ancient adobe Palace and the oldest church * J and the oldest house standing on American soil. It has an * excellent public school system, and all the religious denomina- ^ tions are well represented. It is lighted by electricity. Its J climate is remarkably equable. The summers are cooler at t Santa Fe than any other meteorological station, while the * mean temperature during January, which is the coldest month ? ^ in the year, is about 28 degrees Fahrenheit. There are * three railroads the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, Den- * ver c^' Eio Grande and the New Mexico Central Eailroads. ^ Among the new buildings now being erected, is a large * addition to both the St. A'incents and Sunmount Sanitarium, | costing over $100,000.00, the new Fonda Hotel, which will % cost when C()m])leted, ov(n- $300,000.00; the new Postoffice % and Federal Building, costing $300,000.00; a large $100,000.00 | office l)uil(ling: a $r)0,000.00 Ba|)tist Church and the Santa | Fe Club's new home and golf links; besides many new homes and small business houses.

The American School of Areliaeology has been (vstablish- ed and will be heacjuarters for research and excavating of

Work will commence in the summer on a Knights of Columbus home to cost $100,000. ' |

J Santa Fe county is the oldest mineral producer in the J J southwest. Gold, silver, lead, zinc, copper, turquoise, fire ^ i clay and building stone are found in large quantities. The * 4i leading districts are the Old and New Placers, the San Pedro, Z Golden, Macho, Glorieta and Cerrillos. At Madrid, near * Cerrillos, are found large coal deposits and the coal deposits * extend over a considerable portion of that part of the coun- *

try. The county seat, Santa Fe, capital of the state, is rich J

$ in historic interests and ideally located as a health resort. %

Its immediate surroundings possess great scenic beauty. * On all sides rise majestic mountains to a height of 13,000 feet,

while to the east, west and north are National Forests, 20 %

miles to the west is the wonderful Pajarito Cliff Dwellers' %

Park with 20,000 prehistoric habitations. Population of the *

SILVER CITY.

(Prepared by Silver City Chamber of Commerce.)

Silver City's citizenship of 4,500 people is inspired with confi- dence, based upon the business neccessity for a great health and trading center at this point, and every moVlern convenience of wel- fare has been established.

Located as it is, in the southwestern part of the State of New Mexico, sixtv-five miles north of the International boundary of Mexico, in the latitude of Savannah, Georgia, and Cairo, Egypt, having an altitude of 0,000 feet, Silver City has been declared by United States Government physicians to be the ideal health resort of 'the Southwest.

In the center of a great cattle and mineral section. Silver City's position as the distributing point for this great territory is impreg- nable. The Atchison, To[)eka cs: Santa Fe Railway serves this sec- tion. Silver Citv being the terminal of the Rincoh-Deming branch. The mining camps of Sania Rita, Hurl(\v, Ficn-ro. Pinos Altos, Tyrone,- Hanover and Mogollon, with a combined po[)ulation of over 12,000, Patronize Silver Citv's business institutions. Stock raising has always been an ini{)()rtant business in this section of the country and 'in addition lliere are two iin[)()rtant irrigated districts for which Silver Citv is the main trading center.

liank dei)()sits of over S2. 000, 000 show the thrift of Silver City's peoide and are a true index of (he general pros[)erity of the (•onnnuii 1 f \'.
